Playing Hide & Seek with Lions
I’m sitting at the Johannesburg airport right now, waiting to board a midnight flight home. I am really looking forward to sharing photos and stories with you. There isn’t much time before boarding but I wanted to give you a taster of what’s to come.
It’s a shot from last night’s game drive. Just minutes before I took this picture we were on a hill watching two male lions sleeping in the tall grass. They were almost invisible. We found them by accident when another group from Gorah drove past startling one of the males and waking him up. By the time we arrived both male lions were sleeping so soundly that our motor noise and our excited voices had no effect.
We watched them for the better part of an hour but they were docile. We had just decided to return to the lodge for cocktails when we received a radio call from one of the other wardens. He said to drive down the hill to the waterhole at the base. There was a lioness sunning herself. Minutes later I was able to take this picture.
She’s a beauty!
