I became very interested in Icelandic Sagas after reading novels by the Norwegian Nobel Laureate, Sigrid Undsett. Between 1999 and 2012 I travelled to Iceland twice, to visit, explore and research. One of my favourite stops was The Árni Magnússon Institute. It was here I saw the old Icelandic manuscripts including the Skarðsbók collection of apostles’ lives; a vellum manuscript from the 14th century, which was purchased at auction in 1965 by the philanthropic efforts of some Icelandic banks and subsequently donated to the Institute in 1965. In 2006 I wrote a paper on the Sagas for Erasmus.
