Before I can write a character I have to find out their name and see how they look. It’s a little like being at a party where you spot someone intriguing across the room then wait hoping to arrange an introduction before the evening ends.
I expect that sounds a bit odd. But I can’t write a character until I know their name, and I can’t give them a name until I have a good grip on their character. It’s a conundrum.
In Chapter 3, Tree Meets Raft; Boy Meets Water, their raft slams into a fallen tree tossing Norman and Randy overboard. Norman recovers quickly but it takes everything Alex and Norman have to rescue Randy from the fast water. When the raft starts to break apart, the trio is forced to climb a 20 metre high cliff. The twins must help Alex every inch; she’s petrified of heights. They make it to the top when… A gravelly old voice bellowed from behind them. “What the blue scorching blazes is going on here?”
