I have to start with a confession. One of these truths is rather squeaky.
Number 3 – Squeaky TRUTH
I do love sailing and technically (can’t you just hear the air quotes around “technically”) I was the captain of record all three sailing trips I mentioned, plus a trip on the IJsselmeer and the Markermeer in the Netherlands. And I do now have my RYA certification (that’s the la-di-da Royal Yachting Association to all y’all). However…
…everybody on those sailing trips, including the teenagers, were all far far FAR better sailors than I will ever be. So it’s a truth… but a squeaky one.
Number 2 – TRUTH
In 2011 I went to Canada, certified as a Professional Trainer with CanFit Pro and managed a team of trainers at a gym for a short time. My certification has expired now along with any claims I have on personal fitness.
Number 4 – TRUTH
I haven’t told many people, but this past summer I signed with a literary agency in New York – Sterling Lord Literistic. It still doesn’t feel quite real.
Being a committed glass-is-half-empty kind of gal I can’t stop asking myself why me? What would an agency who represents – and I’m quoting here – “…a wide range of authors, including National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize winners, New York Times bestsellers, literary and commercial novelists, politicians, journalists, scientists, and noted writers in children’s literature,” want with me?
Mostly I try not to think about it, and just keep writing. But I admit to having a few sleepless nights where I lie awake imagining the email that will tell me it’s all been a horrible misunderstanding (they wanted another JB Warren) and I really do suck. FYI – writing is HARD on your ego.
Number 1 – BIG FAT LIE
You guessed it, Jen. I do not love to skate. Forwards or backwards. I do have dreams about skating backwards and feeling like I’m flying, but that’s as far as it goes. I tried ringette once and came away with sore arms and shoulders because I had to use the boards to stop. And at university, after watching me take a few laps around, a rink a boy asked me, “Are you sure you’re Canadian?”
So, there you have it.
I hope you’ll come back. Starting in November I’ll be posting to a schedule.
- 1st Monday of the month will be a Brain Dump Day where I write about travel, workshops, my life…
- 2nd Monday of the month will feature The Writers Room where I’ll share things I’ve learned about writing and editing from my years of classes, submissions, and as an editor.
- 3rd Monday of the month is The Guest Room. I’ve met an amazing cadre of writers and editors and agents since I started this journey. I’m going to screw up my courage and, once a month, ask one of them to give an interview or share a blogpost.
- 4th Monday will be an Open House. A community day for sharing useful links, blogs, book recommendations and reviews from other writers/editors blogs.
